How it works
Add your assets (what you own) and liabilities (what you owe). Net worth = total assets minus total liabilities.
Assets: Cash and savings, investment accounts (brokerage, IRAs), retirement accounts (401k, 403b), real estate (market value), vehicles, and other valuable property.
Liabilities: Mortgage balance, student loans, auto loans, credit card balances, personal loans, and any other debts.
The calculator also shows your liquid net worth (excluding home equity and illiquid assets) and compares your total net worth against Federal Reserve benchmarks for your age group using the Survey of Consumer Finances.
FAQ
What is net worth?
Total assets minus total liabilities. If you own $300k in assets and owe $150k in debt, your net worth is $150k.
What is the average net worth by age?
Median net worth (2022 Fed data): Under 35: $39k. 35-44: $136k. 45-54: $247k. 55-64: $365k. 65-74: $410k. Means are much higher due to wealth concentration.
Should I include my home?
Yes — include the market value as an asset and the mortgage as a liability. The calculator also shows liquid net worth (excluding home equity) for a clearer picture of accessible wealth.
What is a good net worth for my age?
A common target: annual salary x (age / 10). But the median for your age group is a more realistic benchmark. Any positive trend is good progress.
How often should I track net worth?
Quarterly or annually. Monthly tracking can cause anxiety from market swings. Focus on the long-term trend, not any single snapshot.
